If you’re anything like me and you’re already missing summer, it is for good reason. I’m not referring to BBQ’s and beer gardens but to the benefits of sunlight. Now more than ever we need to make sure we are seeking out the sun to support our mental and physical health:
It increases productivity and alertness
Exposure to sunlight first thing in the morning helps to activate the body’s release of cortisol. This stress hormone is used to increase our productivity and alertness.
It stops you feeling tired and groggy
Simultaneously the bright light will help to slow down the body’s release of the sleep hormone melatonin. This helps you to feel less groggy and is a lifesaver if you’re not a morning person like me 😴
It helps you to sleep better at night
Morning sunlight helps to strengthen your circadian rhythm, this is your internal clock. It regulates our sleep/wake cycle so we know when to be active and when we should be sleeping.
It supports your immune health
UV rays help the body to make vitamin d. This essential vitamin supports your immune system and helps strengthen your bones.
It helps you to feel calm
Sunlight boosts our serotonin levels which helps us to feel calm, positive and more focused.
It’s the simplest habits that have the biggest impact on our lives. Drink your coffee in the garden, take your dog for a walk or if you can’t get outside try sitting by a window.
Just remember safety first kids…always wear suncream and don’t look directly at the sun 😎
